Student Welfare

Absence

When students are to be absent from school for a lengthy period of time i.e. severe illness or holiday, the principal should be notified and a formal application should be made at least 15 days in advance. (application forms are available at the office)

When students are absent for a short time, a written explanation upon the student's return is sufficient. This explanation is recorded in the class roll and the letter is filed.

If students must leave the school during the day, a 'red slip' must be filled out at the office or by the class teacher, explaining the reason for the partial absence. These are also recorded and stored with the roll.

Injury

The teacher on duty will make an initial assessment of any injury.

If only a graze, First Aid will be administered by the supervising teacher.

When medical attention is considered necessary, parents will be notified immediately. If parents are unavailable, the Principal will ensure that medical attention is secured according to instructions given by parents and recorded in school files.

Illness

When students are ill during the school day they will be relocated to the Sick Bay opposite the Office in the Main Building and parents notified if appropriate. When collecting a child from the Sick Bay, parents are asked to report to the Office first.

Parents are asked to make realistic assessments of whether or not their child is well enough to attend school. Please be mindful of the likelihood of spreading colds and flu if your child attends school whilst unwell.

Allergies

Serious allergic conditions, especially allergies to certain types of food, must be notified to the Principal and discussed with the child's teacher each year.

Photos of children with serious medical conditions including allergies are posted in the staff room to assist in the early identification of onset of a serious medical problem.

There is a risk that students with allergies may inadvertently consume inappropriate food from others, especially when food is brought into the school on special occasions i.e. birthdays. Teachers can assist parents of children with allergies by having a supply of foods approved and supplied by parents on such occasions.

Parents will not be asked to label food such as birthday cakes with ingredients as this is not considered a "fail safe" precaution for seriously allergic conditions.

Infectious diseases

We ask that for the health and safety of the school community as well as for the child concerned that parents keep their child home from school while they still unwell and infectious.

Sun protection

Students are required to wear the school hat or a wide brimmed hat. Students without hats will be directed to shaded areas.

Driving Safely

It is essential that special care be taken when dropping off and collecting children, in particular:

Bullying

Inappropriate behaviour is actively discouraged. Children are reminded of the Code of Behaviour on a regular basis. If inappropriate behaviour such as bullying occurs there is a three tier response. Firstly, the children are interviewed by the teacher on duty or class teacher. Secondly, if necessary the matter will be referred to the stage supervisor. Thirdly, the Principal will be involved and parents may be contacted.
