Special Support Classes

Reading recovery

Students selected for Reading Recovery are those having difficulty in reading/writing achievements in Year 1 classrooms. Reading Recovery offers early identification and intervention for students "at risk". Students attend daily 30 minute one to one lessons which supplement the regular Classroom Literacy Program. Reading Recovery Teachers make a diagnostic assessment of each student's literacy learning and keep detailed records of student progress over time. Instruction is intensive and individual with the teacher responding to each student's learning needs.

Within the Reading Recovery program, comprehension has a central focus. Each lesson is built around a framework of reading books and writing stories. Students are shown how to work strategically on text to access written messages. The goal for each student is to develop effective reading and writing skills with students discontinuing when they can operate independently at grade level.

English as a Second Language

Additional teaching resources are available for students whose first language is not English. The program provides ongoing and reasonably intensive assistance to ensure each student can benefit fully from the curriculum.
